Every year in July we celebrate the plastic free month, its intention is to raise the awareness about negative impact of plastic waste on the environment and encourage people to give up on single-use plastic packages. It’s a great occasion to think about how our daily habits impact our planet and what steps can we take to decrease our impact on environment. 

 

One of the best and easiest way to reduce the amount of plastic is to substitute bottled water with tap water. It is not only an ecological solution for the issue of excess plastic but also conscious decision good for your health and for your wallet.

Why plastic is an issue? 

 

Plastic is omnipresent in our life – packaging, bottles, bags and cutlery. Despite its practicality, its durability creates a huge issue. Plastic contaminates the ocean, endanger wild animals, it penetrates the food chain, also affecting our health. 

 

How can we help? 

 

Giving up plastic may seem difficult but, each of us can take small steps, which together will bring huge benefits. Here are a few ideas how we can contribute to decreasing amount of plastic in our life: avoid disposable plastic packaging  and choose products with glass or paper packaging, the best option is to buy products sold in bulk. Taking your own re-usable bag for shopping –  they last longer and are more ecological. Segregating the waste, especially trying not to produce such a waste. Another great solution is using re-usable bottles or mugs  instead of buying water in plastic bottles. 

 

Choose tap water 

 

One of the easiest and the most effective ways to reduce plastic is drinking tap water. In many of our polish cities, including Katowice tap water is good quality and safe to drink. Waterworks in Katowice is regularly testing  and monitoring the quality of water, providing for the citizens, access to clean and healthy tap water.  

Choosing tap water, we are giving up on plastic bottles which often end up on garbage dump or natural environment – mention Stanisław Krusz. 

 

How to start? 

 

To regularly drink tap water, a few easy steps can help you: 

  • Get yourself a re-usable bottle 
  • Remember the simple rules – turn on the tap with cold water, put your hand under the water, wait until its cold and then pour it into your glass or bottle and drink. 
  • Filter the water – If, despite everything, you still have concerns about taste or quality of water, you can invest into water filter. 

 

Together we can make a difference, so promote tap water – share the benefits of drinking tap water with your friends and family and encourage them to changing their habits. 

 

Campaign “July as a month without plastic” it’s an excellent occasion to our day-to-day habits and contribute to protecting our planet. Giving up on disposable plastic packaging a the choosing to drink tap water are easy steps that every each of us can take.
