Janusz Steinhoff
Chairman of the Council of the Chamber
Doctor of technical sciences, specialist in mineral processing. Graduate and long-time researcher at
the Silesian University of Technology. Author of numerous publications in the field of economics,
mining and energy.
Founder and activist of the underground university structures of the NSZZ Solidarność trade union.
During the Round Table discussions, he served on behalf of Solidarność as an expert on mining and
environmental protection.
In the 1990s he was one of the leaders of the PChD, then joined the Alliance of Polish Christian
Democrats, operating within the AWS. Member of the Sejm of the 10th, first and third terms.
From 1990 to 1994 he served as President of the Higher Mining Authority.
From 1996 to 1997 he was Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Katowice.
From October 31, 1997 to October 19, 2001, he held the office of Minister of Economy in the
government of Jerzy Buzek, from June 2000 he was also Deputy Prime Minister, and from July 2001
he was temporary head of the Ministry of Communications.
Member of supervisory boards of state-owned and private sector companies.
In 2005 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Rebirth of Poland.
